National Geographic expeditions for 9th-12th grade students!

National Geographic invites the next generation of explorers to get out in the field and follow in the footsteps of National Geographic’s award-winning photographers, writers, and scientists.
Students completing 9th-12th grades are eligible to participate in
National Geographic Student Expeditions!

National Geographic has been exploring the planet since 1888, and their network of experts and contacts across the globe allows them to create unique and exciting travel opportunities for students. While on a National Geographic Expedition, you will get to know Maasai elders in Tanzania, meet sheep farmers in New Zealand, or listen to an Aboriginal guide tell ancient Dreamtime stories in Australia.

To make these innovative trips possible, National Geographic has partnered with Putney Student Travel. National Geographic offers 3 types of trips: expeditions, field workshops, and community service programs. On both expeditions and field workshops, you will be joined by a National Geographic expert for part of the trip and you will have the opportunity to pursue an On Assignment project of your choice.

On the 14-15-day community service program, you will live in a local community and take part in everyday life while working on a variety of service projects.
National Geographic offers scholarships for students who are interested in educational summer experiences but are unable to afford these opportunities.

The National Geographic scholarship program generally considers students whose parents’ combined income is less than $50,000 and who have few assets.

To apply for a summer 2012 scholarship, please submit the following scholarship application materials by March 1, 2012:

Parents’/guardians’ most recent federal tax returns;
Two (2) completed Teacher References;
A statement explaining parents’ need for financial assistance based on financial obligations and assets;
An applicant statement explaining why you would like to join a National Geographic Student Expedition and what you feel you can contribute to it, as well as your interest in the country or region and On Assignment project on which you wish to focus.

Please note: The $700 deposit is waived for scholarship applicants.

The entire completed application must be received by next Thursday, March 1, 2012. Teacher Reference forms should be submitted separately but they must also arrive by March 1, 2012.
