Audition for Street Theatre with City at Peace DC!

 City at Peace DC announces auditions for their summer Street Theatre program! Spend your summer singing, dancing, acting, working backstage as Stage Managers, Wardrobe, Sets and Properties designers/builders, Sound Engineers and Theatre Technicians and make a difference in your life and the lives of other teens in the DMV!

The summer Street Theatre program is a six week summer program that allows participants to examine some of the issues facing young people in the DMV and gives them tools for creating steps toward positive change. Youth ages 14-21 are eligible to audition. Youth will also receive training from adult professionals in the areas of acting, singing, dancing, stage management, sound design, wardrobe and costumes, set and properties design, marketing and promotions and leadership development.

The program will culminate in an original musical written and performed by the participants for audiences, outside and in recreation centers across the city. This program runs Monday thru Friday from 10am until 4pm. It begins Monday, June 27, 2011 and ends Friday, August 5, 2011. It is open to young people from DC, Maryland and Virginia. There is no cost to participate.

The audition process is simple. There is nothing to prepare. There are survey forms to fill out, theatre games, a simple dance combination and some singing. City at Peace supplies all of the work. They don’t accept applicants based on talent alone as they are looking for young people who are interested in working together to find solutions to the problems facing our society and their lives. All young people need to do is be willing to go through the process and be able to commit.

Girls Rock! DC Day Camp!

Girls Rock! DC (http://www.girlsrockdc.org/) aims to create a supportive, inclusive and creative space for girls to develop their self-confidence, build community, stand up and rock out!

Girls Rock! builds upon their diverse musical backgrounds, connections to local youth and approaches to grassroots organizing to create a week-long day camp for Washington, D.C. area girls ages 8-18.

This year, Girls Rock! DC will be held from

Monday, August 8 – Friday August 12, from 9am – 5:30pm daily. Camp will be held at Mary McLeod Bethune Public Charter School (http://www.mmbethunepcs.org/home2.html), located at

1404 Jackson St., NE, Washington, DC 20017.

During the week, campers receive small-group instruction on electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, turntables, digital music, or vocals; form bands and collaborate to write an original song or DJ set, which they will perform at a showcase at the end of the week.

Campers will also learn about the history of women in rock, gender and cultural identity, band merchandise and promotion, conflict resolution and other skills young women need to take over the world of music!

Who wants to take a tour of WPGC 95.5?

Our friends at Pursuing a Dream invites students between the ages of 10 – 18 to take a tour of the WPGC 95.5 radio station on Friday, June 24^th! The tour will begin promptly at 11am and will be hosted by a WPGC 95.5 representative.

The tour is FREE but students must submit signed permission forms from their parents. There will be free giveaways so if you’re interested in touring WPGC 95.5 on Friday, June 24^th, contact Pursuing a Dream to receive the permission forms!

Community Service Internship for High School Students

High school students (grades 9-12) are invited to apply for two community service internship opportunities at the DC Public Charter School Board. Students will assist Board staff with office operations, interact with the public and gain employment skills that will prepare them for future opportunities in professional environments.

Students will be provided extensive training in:

• Customer service/community relations;
• Professional telephone reception;
• Office organization;
• Office computer and equipment operation; an
• Interoffice communications and etiquette.

Internships will take place at the D.C. Public Charter School Board headquarters which is located at:

Engineering program available for rising seniors! Earn college credit!

The National Action Council for the Advancement of Minorities in Engineering (NACME) has awarded Prince Georges Community College (PGCC) a grant to allow talented minority high school students the chance to earn as many as eleven college credits during their senior year in high school. The student will take one course in each semester but there is a possibility that the student will be permitted to take two courses during the second semester.

The courses are usually scheduled on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

First Semester

Calculus I – 4 credits

Second Semester

Calculus II – 4 credits

or

Intro to Engineering – 3 credits

or

CAD – 3 credits

Students accepted into the program will be awarded scholarships covering all tuition and fees.

Students who can apply must:

• Be a member of an underrepresented minority group such as African-American, Latino, or American Indian;
• Be USA Citizen or permanent resident;
• Be a senior by September 2011;
• Have an interest in majoring in Engineering in college;
• Have the talent and drive to handle college courses at the same time as their required high school curriculum;
• Have an excellent attendance record

The application deadline is Monday, June 20, 2011!

 Participants in the NACME Engineering Scholars Program will be mentored and given guidance concerning different Engineering Programs. They will also be aided in applying directly to four-year engineering schools upon graduation from high school or remaining at PGCC for the first two years before transferring to a four-year school. All students will be responsible for their own transportation, books and academic materials.

Well Qualified Applicants Will Have:

• A 3.40 GPA in all subjects
• A 3.50 GPA in all math courses taken since entering 9th grade. Minimum level of math completed by June: Algebra 2-Trigonometry
• Excellent Attendance
• Recommendation from a Math Teacher

Applicants Must Submit: 

• One letter of recommendation 
• Official transcript including all grades in all quarters from 9^th, 10^th and the first 2 quarters of 11^th grade. Absences must be indicated on the transcripts. 
• A letter from the applicant describing their interest in majoring in Engineering.

DC National Guard Youth Leaders' Camp!

 The District of Columbia National Guard’s (DCNG) Youth Leaders' Camp is a2-week residential leadership development program for

boys and girls ages 12-15.

Since 1968, the DCNG has provided over 6,000 students throughout the D.C. Metropolitan area the opportunity to learn and implement the principles of leadership, citizenship, and good sportsmanship through classroom discussions, competitive sports and recreational activities. Campers are exposed to recreational and educational summer experiences, adding to their interpersonal growth and development returning them to their communities as role models and responsible future leaders.

 Applications are now available and the registration deadline is June 10, 2011!

The DCNG Camp will be conducted from July 5 – 16, 2011 at Camp Moss Hollow. Camp Moss Hollow is located in Markham, VA, approximately seventy miles west of Washington, DC on more than 400 acres of beautiful woods, nestled in the foothills of the Shenandoah National Park.

Traveling Player's Ensemble - slots are being held for SEED students!

The Traveling Players Ensemble summer camp provides students with intensive, classical theater training that is led by professional theater artists. Students will learn how to perform in outdoor settings and each session culminates in an exciting performance which tours to several locations.

This unique day camp (Monday-Friday) features a campout every Thursday where performers learn Leave No Trace camping techniques, including pitching tents and cooking outdoors. In their final week, students will tour their show and campout close to their performance sites — giving them the experience of wandering entertainers who carry their dinner, tent and props in a backpack. As artists and backpackers, campers learn self-reliance, creative problem solving and to appreciate natures challenges and beauty.

There are a number of programs available for rising 6^th – 12^th graders – which means that there is an opportunity for you! If you are interested in a program but are concerned about cost, don’t be! There are scholarships available and the program has set aside scholarships specifically for SEED students.

To apply for a scholarship, you should:

• Write a letter to Artistic Director Jeanne Harrison explaining why you want to be a member of the Traveling Players’ summer programs and what special qualities you would bring to the Ensemble.
• Ask a teacher or coach who knows you well to fill out the short recommendation form.
• Have your parents provide a copy of their 2010 federal tax return to verify their eligibility for financial aid.
