Charles Drew Morning of Discovery - Opportunity for Middle School students to learn about STEM Careers!

“Are minority youth ‘STEM-phobic’ – are they fearful of studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)?” This is a question that several organizations hope to dispel by encouraging middle school students to study and prepare to enter vital and lucrative careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Their upcoming event, the Charles Drew Morning of Discovery, will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 8am-2:30pm at:

The Charles Drew Morning of Discovery forum will give students an opportunity to explore their interests in science with “Hands-on” science activities, participate in workshops, and meet and talk to African-American scientists from the local area.

Online Entrepreneurship program available for high school students at the University of Maryland!

The Entrepreneurship Essentials Online Program at the University of Maryland, College Park assists students with learning the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and innovation through a 4-week, 100% online series. Students will study online at their own pace and the program is an affordable alternative to credit-based courses and face-to-face programs.

Through the Entrepreneurship Essentials Online Program, students will learn:

How to develop a successful business plan;

What are the principles of entrepreneurial opportunity analysis and decision-making in an increasingly dynamic and technically-inclined society;

How to understand what customers really value and effectively position their innovation for targeting the right set of customers; and

What is right type of financial capital for their venture and how to acquire it.

Tuition for the 4-week (June 25-July 20, 2012) program for High School students is $650, including books and materials. There are no additional fees required to complete the online program.

The Entrepreneurship Essentials Online Program is offered exclusively online, there is no face-to-face component. Students are expected to fully participate in course readings, online discussions, and the submission of one major deliverable per course.

LearnServe International invites rising sophomores and juniors from Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia to apply for
the 2012–13 LearnServe Fellows Program.

As LearnServe Fellows, students
will have the opportunity to:

Connect with like-minded students from schools across the DC area;

Engage with organizations who are tackling poverty, hunger, discrimination, climate change, and other pressing social problems, in DC and around the world;

Develop leadership skills so that they are prepared to respond to these global challenges; and

Design and launch a “social venture” – an organization or project that will benefit their school or community.

Looking for a summer job? Earn $9/hr with the Casey Trees Summer Crew!

The Casey Trees Summer Crew is a team of highly motivated high school students who serve as caretakers for the District’s trees for eight weeks over the summer.

General responsibilities include watering, weeding, mulching, tracking tree condition, and educating the public about basic tree care. Crew members travel by truck or street bike (as a part of the Water By-Cycle team).

This year’s Casey Trees program starts June 22 and ends August 3, 2012.

Crew members earn $9.00 an hour and work 35 hours/week, Monday – Friday. In addition to caring for trees, crew members participate in exciting activities such as tree climbing, meeting new people, and giving back to the community.

Casey Trees is currently accepting applications! All applications must be completed and submitted online by May 18, 2012.

In addition to the application you must meet the following criteria in order to apply to Casey Trees:

• Be enrolled in or just graduating from a high school in the metro DC area;
• Be 16 years or older;
• Be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions with a variety of landscaping tools and equipment;
• Be interested in learning about and caring for trees;
• Be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.; and
• Be a great team player.

Please note: You will have to complete the online application in one sitting. You cannot save your work and return later to complete it.

The number of available Summer Crew positions is limited and the selection process is extremely competitive. Interviews will be held on a rotating basis between April 16 and May 31 and final decisions will determined by the end of May 2012.

Peace Thru Culture camp for students ages 6-14!

Peace Thru Culture’s “Culture Camp” is a full day, summer program that allows participants to explore various cultures through art, music, movement, culinary arts, guest presenters and field trips.

Culture Camp offers summer camp programming that includes the exploration of cultures from around the world. Each week, campers will explore a new culture using Peace Thru Culture’s hands-on, interactive approach. The camp will also offer a language track (Spanish and Mandarin), volunteer opportunities and a sports/fitness track.

Space is limited so families that are interested in attending Culture Camp are strongly ecnouraged to register early.

Peace Thru Culture’s summer camp serves students in the following age groups:

Ages 6 – 8

Ages 9 – 11

Ages 12 – 14

The cost to attend Culture Camp is $150/per week and this fee includes all field trips and activity fees.

The dates for the 1^st Session of Culture Camp will be June 25 – July 6, 2012 and the camp will run from 9am — 4pm. The Camp will be held at:

City Kids applications and Fun Day: April 21, 2012!

City Kids is currently accepting applications from 6^th and 7^th graders who are interested in an exciting summer opportunity!

City Kids offers extraordinary outdoor adventure experiences for little or no cost to eligible children living in the greater Washington, DC area.

City Kids programs take place primarily in the Maryland countryside and in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. While participating in City Kids, students leave their familiar urban environment and discover the outdoors, often for the first time! By learning new skills, meeting new friends, and developing greater self-confidence, students are better able to succeed in building happy, healthy, and productive relationships. While at City Kids, students will go horseback riding, hiking, backpacking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, rock climbing and fishing!

The application process for City Kids is slightly different this year as all applications must be completed and submitted by next Saturday, April 21 during the City Kids Fun Day! Fun Day! is mandatory for parents and guardians of all first-year (Ranger) City Kids students and for anyone interested in submitting an application to enroll for the Summer 2012 program.

During Fun Day!, all new Rangers and Ranger applicants will get the chance to meet each other as well as a few senior City Kids students (JETs) as they work together on fun challenges. During these activities, parents will receive a thorough introduction to City Kids as well as some important information about the summer. City Kids staff will provide an in-depth look at the experiences students have received over the years and will answer any questions parents and students have about the program.

The Fun Day! and Parent Orientation will be held at the Aquatic Resources Education Center from 11am – 2pm. The Aquatic Resources Education Center is located at:

Watershed Explorers Camp at the National Aquarium for rising 6th-8th graders!

The National Aquarium invites rising 6th-8th graders to apply to their Watershed Explorers Camp. The Watershed Explorers Camp is a week-long day camp that will introduce students to the dynamics of watersheds, from water chemistry to animal identification and human impact.

The camp will include three (3) days of field experience on the Anacostia River, including: a canoe trip, a boat trip, and wetland grass planting. Campers will also learn about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, how we impact it, and how we can protect it. There is not cost to attend the Watershed Explorers Cost as all materials, transportation, the canoe trip, and the boat trip are included in the program.

Students can select from two (2) week-long sessions: July 9-13 or July 23-27.

To apply to the Watershed Explorers Camp, students must:

Attend a Washington, DC public or public charter school;

Be enrolled in or entering grades 6-8
in September 2012;

Request a science teacher to complete the teacher recommendation form;

Be interested in biology, environmental science, or general science; and

Applications for the 2012 U.S. Space Camp program are available!

The Fish & Richardson U.S. Space Camp Scholarship is an opportunity for three (3) students from SEED Public Charter School to attend U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama from July 29 – August 3, 2012.

To attend, students must be between the ages of 12-14 during the dates that they would be at Space Camp.

The Fish & Richardson U.S. Space Camp Scholarship includes: 

Full tuition to U.S. Space Camp; 

Round trip air fare from Washington, DC to Huntsville, Alabama; 

Transportation to/from the airport in Huntsville, Alabama to Space Camp; 

$250 for expenses; and 

A U.S. Space Camp space suit.

Summer internships available with the Federal Government: Applications due April 30!

The Student Educational Employment Program (SEEP) provides Federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree-seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical school, vocational school, or a two-or-four-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

In order to apply, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. Be at least 16 years old;

2. Be a U.S. citizen, or national, or lawfully admitted to the United States as a permanent resident or otherwise authorized to be employed;

3. Pursuing any of the following accredited educational programs at least half-time: High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma, Vocational/Technical certificate, Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree, Graduate Degree, or Professional Degree;

4. Be in good academic standing as determined by the academic institution (generally GPA of 2.0 or higher);

5. Meet personnel suitability and physical requirements; and

6. Meet the OPM Qualification Standard for the series and grade of the position.

High school students who are interested in working at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) should send a resume and letter from your school to HRSAjoboppresume@hrsa.gov. The subject of your message should state “Student Employment – (and if applicable) YOUR MAJOR” and the letter should state that you are enrolled and in good academic standing at the school. The letter must be received
by 5pm on April 30, 2012.

College Students who are interested in working at HRSA should submit a resume, an unofficial transcript (if selected for a position, an official transcript will be required), and a letter from your school stating that you are in good academic standing.

Crump Law Camp for students interested in law - Applications due THIS FRIDAY!

The National Bar Association (NBA) is seeking applicants for their 2012 Crump Law Camp. The Crump Law Camp was established to introduce students entering the 9^th – 11^th grades to the judicial system. The camp is designed to provide high school students with an enjoyable and comprehensive introduction to the challenges of a legal education and to encourage young people to become lawyers and to seek legal careers in the future.

Campers will be housed on the campus of Howard University where they will live in a protected campus environment and young attorneys, law students, and college graduates will serve as counselors and mentors. Participants will attend law school classes at the Howard University School of Law. While open enrollment is available to students across the country, an emphasis will be placed on enabling students from low-income families to attend. Tuition for the camp will cover transportation to and from Washington, D.C., housing, meals, educational materials, and expenses for field trips.

The Crump Law Camp will provide students with an exciting academic and social agenda and the competitive highlight of the camp is the Evett L. Simmons Mock Trial Competition. The four winners of this competition will be invited to the NBA's Annual Convention.

This year’s camp will be held from July 7-14, 2012 and applications are currently available on the NBA website.
