Paid internship at the Smithsonian! Applications due April 1!

 

Since launching in 2010, the Youth Engagement through Science (YES!) internship program has connected local youth with Smithsonian collections, experts, and training to inspire them to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. This internship experience provides youth from communities traditionally underrepresented in science careers with the resources needed to help them to achieve their ultimate goal of attending college.

During six weeks in the summer, students who participate in YES! work side-by-side with Smithsonian researchers and educators behind the scenes and away from the public areas of the museum. Interns are given the unique opportunity to work in the Museum’s vast research collections where they see rare objects and specimens, including meteorites, mummies, and mammoth skulls!

Over the course of the internship, YES! interns acquire valuable technological skills and enhance their written and verbal communication abilities through guided workshops. Working with Museum educators, they help visitors experience the Museum in interactive ways.

In early fall, interns attend a ten-week college preparatory program that rounds out the third component of the YES! program. Students will be guided through the college application and orientation process in sessions covering a variety of topics. Interns will also tour local colleges to help them prepare for their pursuit of higher learning. To continue refining their communication skills, students will resume their rotations in the exhibit halls.

The YES! program aims to form a bridge between the Smithsonian Institution and students interested in STEM careers by providing new avenues for them to understand and participate in scientific pursuits at the next level.

Once you create an account and log-in, click “Search for Program.” Next to “Office/Museum/Research Center,” is a drop-down box; select “National Museum of Natural History” from the list. The program is open only to students who are currently in the 9^th-11^th grade and the stipend will be awarded to students only upon completion of both the summer and fall sessions.

Register for the 2012 Young Women's Conference on Non-Traditional Careers!

 

Young women who are currently in the 8^th grade through their 1^st year in college are invited to explore non-traditional careers at the 6^th Annual Young Women’s Conference on Non-Traditional Careers!

The conference will be held on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 9:30am – 3:00pm at the:

Conference attendees will have an opportunity to meet successful women in non-traditional careers, including: Technology, Aerospace, Architecture, Bio-Medicine, and other fields. Participants will also learn about the importance and role that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will have on their futures.

During the conference, there will an opportunity to:

Interact with robots, and their creators; and

Learn more about Career & Technical Education in DC.

The conference is FREE and pre-registration is required. Registration must be completed by

March 14, 2012. 

Breakfast and Lunch will be provided (breakfast and badge pick-up starts at 8am).

Internships for high school students at Goddard Space Flight Center!

The Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland has several internships available for high school students in the Engineering, Information Systems, Astronomy, Earth Science, Space Science, Business and Education fields.

Great opportunity for rising 9th-12th graders! Application deadline is Tuesday, July 5!

Rising 9^th-12^th graders are invited to apply for the Howard University Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence (HU IC CAE) Camp Cyber 2011.

Camp Cyber 2011 is part of The Howard University (HU) – Virginia Tech Intelligence Community (IC) Center of Academic Excellence (CAE). Camp Cyber is a FREE, 2-week academic and enrichment day camp that focuses on engineering, technology, cyber security, cross-cultural and international awareness and career opportunities in the United States Intelligence Community.

The dates of the camp are July 18^th – 29^th and the camp will run Monday – Friday from 9am – 4pm on the campus of Howard University and will include off-campus trips.

Selected participants will be paid $300 for their participation in the 2-week camp. Participants will also receive lunch daily and all supplies and materials that they will need for the camp will be provided.

Students are required to attend all days and participate in all activities.

Selection into the HU IC CAE Camp Cyber 2011 is competitive and all applicants must submit the following documents in order to be considered:

1. An online application
2. A 250-500 word cohesive essay that answers the following two questions:
• Why do you want to participate in the HU IC CAE Camp Cyber 2011 Program?
• What interests you about science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics and why?
• Please note that this is an online application and it is highly recommended that you first write your essay in Microsoft Word and then cut and paste the essay into the online application. This essay should not include any special formatting (i.e. bolded text, underlining, italics, special fonts, characters, symbols, etc.).
3. One (1) letter of recommendation
• This recommendation can be from a science or math teacher, guidance counselor, pastor or mentor that is not related to you.
• Please talk to this person before adding his/her name to see if he/she would be willing to provide a recommendation for you.
• The recommender should speak to your school performance, interests or extracurricular activities, leadership qualities and why you should be selected for this program.

Engineering program available for rising seniors! Earn college credit!

The National Action Council for the Advancement of Minorities in Engineering (NACME) has awarded Prince Georges Community College (PGCC) a grant to allow talented minority high school students the chance to earn as many as eleven college credits during their senior year in high school. The student will take one course in each semester but there is a possibility that the student will be permitted to take two courses during the second semester.

The courses are usually scheduled on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

First Semester

Calculus I – 4 credits

Second Semester

Calculus II – 4 credits

or

Intro to Engineering – 3 credits

or

CAD – 3 credits

Students accepted into the program will be awarded scholarships covering all tuition and fees.

Students who can apply must:

• Be a member of an underrepresented minority group such as African-American, Latino, or American Indian;
• Be USA Citizen or permanent resident;
• Be a senior by September 2011;
• Have an interest in majoring in Engineering in college;
• Have the talent and drive to handle college courses at the same time as their required high school curriculum;
• Have an excellent attendance record

The application deadline is Monday, June 20, 2011!

 Participants in the NACME Engineering Scholars Program will be mentored and given guidance concerning different Engineering Programs. They will also be aided in applying directly to four-year engineering schools upon graduation from high school or remaining at PGCC for the first two years before transferring to a four-year school. All students will be responsible for their own transportation, books and academic materials.

Well Qualified Applicants Will Have:

• A 3.40 GPA in all subjects
• A 3.50 GPA in all math courses taken since entering 9th grade. Minimum level of math completed by June: Algebra 2-Trigonometry
• Excellent Attendance
• Recommendation from a Math Teacher

Applicants Must Submit: 

• One letter of recommendation 
• Official transcript including all grades in all quarters from 9^th, 10^th and the first 2 quarters of 11^th grade. Absences must be indicated on the transcripts. 
• A letter from the applicant describing their interest in majoring in Engineering.

Internships available for students interested in Science or Engineering!

The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division is the Navy’s center of excellence for ships and ship systems. For over 100 years, Carderock has helped preserve and enhance the nation’s presence on and under the seas. Carderock is the full-spectrum research and development, test and evaluation, engineering and Fleet support organization for the Navy’s ships, submarine, military watercraft, and unmanned vehicles with insight into new concepts and technologies for the Navy Fleet of the 21^st century.

Carderock is looking for highly motivated high school students who are interested in receiving hands-on experience in the fields of Engineering, Science and Computers in a research and development and test and evaluation environment.

Selected students will be placed in a wide variety of scientific and engineering fields with mentors who are scientists, engineers and technicians.  Mentors will work with students during the summer to give them a first-hand understanding of their profession and will encourage students to pursue careers in Science and Engineering. The Carderock summer program will expose students to scientific and engineering practice and personnel as well as DOD (Department of Defense) research and engineering activities and goals that will encourage a positive image and supportive attitude toward our defense community.

In order to be eligible, students must:

• Be enrolled in high school or admission to college in the fall (if they are a senior);
• Be United States citizens;
• Be 16 years of age.

The National Space Club Scholars Program is currently accepting applications!

The National Space Club Scholars Program is a summer intern program for up to 30 high school students. During the program, students will interact with and learn from NASA space scientists and engineers at either the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD (up to 25 students) or the NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA (up to 5 students). The program is conducted from June 27 – August 5, 2011.

The purpose of the Scholars Program is to provide students with an opportunity to experience how research and development organizations operate on a day-to-day basis in direct support of NASA's mission to inspire the next generation of explorers. Participants will be assigned to work with a technical professional in a field related to the student's stated interests.

The available areas of interest include: Earth and Space Systems Science, Computer Science and Engineering. While most placements include computer applications, biological laboratory experiences are not available.

The National Space Club provides a stipend of $1,800 to help defray transportation and meal expenses during this six-week summer program.
Potential NSC Scholars must:

• Have completed their sophomore year in high school in good standing by the end of the current academic year;
• Be 16 years of age by the program start date;
• Be a U.S. citizen;
• Live and maintain permanent residence within commuting distance of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, or the NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA.
• Have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
