Summer Institute at Goddard Space Center for middle school girls!

 

The Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland is offering a 5-day Summer Institute to increase the awareness of and provide opportunities for middle school girls to explore non-traditional career fields. During the Summer Institute in Science, Technology, Engineering and Research (SISTER), participants will interact with research scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Middle school girls entering grades 7 & 8 and who have at least a “B” average in science or math are eligible to apply.

The Public Charter Youth Leadership Council is looking for students who want to advocate for changes in charter schools!

Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS) is currently accepting applications for the Public Charter Youth Leadership Council (PCYLC). ALL 6^th – 12^th grade D.C. public charter school students are strongly urged to apply!

As part of the D.C. Public Charter Youth Leadership Council, members will meet with other public charter student leaders several times a year for advocacy training, hands-on outreach efforts, and to share their ideas with FOCUS about needs in the charter student community. PCYLC members will also act as youth advocates for D.C. public charter schools, with monthly opportunities to speak to public officials.

If you are interested in student government, advocacy, and service, you are strongly encouraged to apply. The application deadline is next Friday, February 17.

Prospective applicants must submit an application (please contact Mr. Cotton for an application) and a 300-500-word essay highlighting the qualities that a good leader should possess. The selection committee will make their decisions based on experience, community involvement, school engagement, and demonstrated leadership.

Students interested in law and criminal justice can apply for DC's Junior Police Academy!

The Jr. Police Academy is a 6-week (June 25, 2012 – August 3, 2012) summer program for students (ages 14 – 17) who are curious about law or are interested in law enforcement, politics, and the criminal justice system. Academy participants will have a unique opportunity to learn about the criminal justice system and the internal operations of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

As part of the program, students will:

Meet for morning or afternoon roll call at Police Headquarters (AM or PM shift);

Make weekly trips to the MPD Police Academy for learning and observing;

Meet and hear from Homicide Detectives, Investigators and Police Commanders;

Visit the Courthouse and interact with local judges;

Visit Harbor Patrol, Canine Unit, Police Stations and the Joint Operations Command Center;

Visit the Office of Unified Communications (9-1-1 Center) and learn how calls are routed;

Meet members from the U.S. Attorney's Office and Office of the Attorney General;

Hear from lawyers about DC laws and legal cases;

Participate in Outreach Events, including National Night Out and "All Hands on Deck;" and

Visit the Crime & Punishment, Spy & News Museums.

MPD expects to identify up to 60 teens from the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program and introduce them to law and the criminal justice system. To participate in the Jr. Police Academy, students must be registered and certified by the Department of Employment Services (DOES) Summer Youth Employment Program.

Scholarships available for 6th grade students to attend Camp Echo Hill!

For the 3^rd consecutive year, the Echo Hill Campership Fund is generously offering scholarships (a value of nearly $3,000!) that would cover the tuition costs for 6^th grade SEED students to attend Camp Echo Hill this summer. Last year, SEED received three scholarships and we hope to at least equal, if not surpass that number this year.

Camp Echo Hill is a sleep-away summer camp for 145 boys and girls, ages 7-16. The camp is dedicated to helping children have a happy, exciting, and meaningful experience while also building self-confidence and gaining respect for themselves and others in a safe and nurturing environment.

The scholarship would cover a student’s two week session at Camp Echo Hill and the two week sessions will be held on the following dates:

Sunday, June 24 – Saturday, July 7

Sunday, July 8 – Saturday, July 21

Sunday, July 22 – Saturday, August 4

Sunday, August 5 – Saturday, August 18

National Youth Science Camp - Applications are due next Friday, February 17!

Two graduating high school seniors from DC are being offered the opportunity to join fellow students from each state at the National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) in West Virginia.

The National Youth Science Camp is a residential, science education program for young scientists the summer after they graduate from high school. Students from around the country are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and have voluntary opportunities to participate in an outdoor adventure program, gain a new and deep appreciation for the great outdoors, and establish friendships that last a lifetime.

The three-week, life-changing experience is free for students, including travel to and from West Virginia.

Applications are currently being accepted and are due by next Friday, February 17.

The NYSC experience includes overnight expeditions into the Monongahela National Forest where delegates can participate in back-packing, rock-climbing, caving, mountain-biking, or kayaking opportunities. Delegates are required to participate in the camp program for its entirety as the fast-paced activities in the remote location make travel to and from the NYSC very difficult.

Delegates MUST be able to attend the entire NYSC program: Delegates arrive in Charleston, West Virginia on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 and depart on Saturday, July 21, 2012.

The National Youth Science Camp is offered at NO COST to its participants so that selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status. All educational and recreational programming, as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge to the delegates.

The School for Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) is a semester-long, college-prep opportunity in Washington, DC for highly motivated rising juniors.

At SEGL, you will live with amazing people from across the country and during your classes, you will confront ethical questions, leadership dilemmas, and international challenges in the world’s most influential city.

Interested sophomores can apply for either the Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 semester (applications are due next Wednesday, February 15, 2012). Financial aid is available.

If you believe that the world needs better leaders and you want to become one of them, SEGL might be right for you and you are encouraged to apply today!

The Fall 2012 program begins on August 25 and ends on December 15 (including a long weekend in October and Thanksgiving recess). The Spring 2013 will begin on January 26 and will end on May 25 (including a two-week recess in March).

Although SEGL’s tuition, room, and board for 2012/13 is $23,990, Financial Aid is available. Families who are interested in financial aid should file Parent Financial Statements with the School and Student Service for Financial Aid, a program of the National Association of Independent Schools, by February 15^th.
